But you also get what you pay for. I think its funny how kids don't even consider 12's at all...a good quality 2x12 cab with a decent head will hold its own very efficientley. My rule of thumb is never buy any speaker that is gold. or made of aluminum lol. also a smart option is to get a carvin setup their 4x10/head packadges are very affordable and made in the us of motha fuckin a. ampeg cant even say that anymore...

It really depends on your hardware. For cabs, If you have the cash, Find a good deal on Vintage Ampeg classic. I play through an older 8x10. Or a mesa 6x10. Especially if you are using a musicman stingray or Fender (like me) you get the amazing low end, but still some freaking fantastic punch and chunk outta it, followed with fluid warm highs. Makes me wanna cry. that, and you will be louder than your guitarists Blasting them away in practice always makes for a fun time

I'm all about the Ampeg fridge, but I use an SVT410HE for practice. Someone also commented that 12s are good. This is especially true of Aguilar cabs. I guarantee that—with the right head—one of those would keep up with your guitarist's 4x12.
