Your best bet is to do everything yourself that you possibly can.
That means sending out hundreds of friend requests a day, messages, comments, etc.
Once you have a good base of friends from doing that, then you can start getting your friends to post stuff for you.
It takes a while, but that's how my band got over 10,000 friends!

I always found that it was good to do really late at night before bed, so I wouldn't be wasting too much valuable time where I could be doing something a little more social. Also, it's pretty cool to wake up and have a bunch of new friends and plays. Let me know how it goes and if you need any more tips.

my problem right now is i am adding a bunch of people, but it seems only a handfull are interested in music and the majority of them just post a bunch of whore bulletins. if you have over 1000 friends, you're going to have a bunch of those bulletins. I've seen bands with over 25,000 "friends" that only get a handful of plays a day. I think you just need to keep on keeping on, add everyone you can, and if your music is good they'll add you to their profiles and it'll get spread via word of mouth. try the other sites that shayne suggested. add links/banners to any and all websites you frequent. another thing is, try not posting a million bulletins saying "omg listen to my songs!" unless you actually have a new song to listen to, this isn't really an effective matter and personally, I usually delete bands that do that after putting up with it for a day or two unless I'm obsessed with that band. instead if you feel the need to post a bulletin, try telling a funny story, or share something that might intrigue the reader to dig deeper and maybe visit your page and give your music a listen. that's all I have for now. also, there are "friend adders" that automatically add friends so you don't have to waste as much time adding everyone in the world. there are a lot of viruses, but I know I found one or two that worked back in the day when I whored out my music profiles and cared. haha.

I have been posting alot of bulletins like that, but its because i have new songs up! the problem with the adders is that myspace has patched alot of stuff to make them not work.
