If you have a decent laptop, you could go the midi controller route. As for an amp, Alesis make s some nice ones that beat everything in their price range. Or if you plan on hooking up mics and stuff, you could just use a PA.

I use a Novation Xiosynth 49 key. It works as MIDI, a synth, and an audio interface. It's really, really awesome. It was only $400, and on ebay you could find a b-stock version (like I did) for even cheaper. For an amp I use a Behringer K3000FX. It's low priced, it has a 4 channel mixer (one channel is XLR), an on-board EQ, and it says it's 300 watts. It's not, but it's really loud either way. I also run Logic pro for MIDI instruments (i.e. drums) with my xiosynth at the same time. Another synth I would recommend is the Korg R3. It's like a MicroKORG, only with real keys and a lot more control/sounds, it's around $500 I think. Hope that helps, even though I just listed off my set up haha.
