Daniel and I have been eyeballing a vacant building in Springfield for the last several weeks. Our goal is to own and operate a community center (i.e. music venue) in that space.
We went to the Springfield City Hall today to get an idea of what kind of permits we'll need to obtain. This includes a business license, entertainment permit, and sound permits.
We're going back in less than 7 hours (8 AM!!!!!) to go talk with a city development planner. If the zoning on the building we want is actually zoned for the use we need, it's gonna be relatively affordable.
If not, we need to obtain a "change of use" permit for the building, which could be costly and difficult to obtain. No worry, though. We're gonna make it happen no matter what. It's just a matter of how many hoops we have to jump through.
The blatant reality we are facing right now is that this is going to take time, effort, support, and money.
We're not going to ask for a dime from anyone. This is our dream, and we'll scrape together what we need.
We do, however, need your energy and support.
Go out and support the bands at any "541musicescene.com presents" shows. Make this "scene" a scene. Enjoy the music, participate on these boards, get your friends involved, etc.
Establishing an all-inclusive, all-ages, thriving performing arts scene in this town is a completely obtainable goal. We've all seen it rule. We've all seen it suck. Let's prevent the suckiness and strive for our goal.
If anyone has any input, advice, or help they can offer, let us know. We're working our little buns off, but we're grateful and appreciative of any support we can drum up.
I'll leave you with, perhaps, my personal favorite photo of what our scene once was, and what it can aspire to be:
