Recently, I've seen a lot of bashing on Taboo. I just wanted to point out a few things to everyone, and hopefully reverse some of the negative feelings towards the venue.....
First, just the fact that they're doing all-ages shows is amazing. Let's not forget how lucky we are to have that, especially in light of Samurai Duck recently closing their doors to all-ages shows on weekdays.
They used to do shows only on Thursdays. Now they're willing to give other days of the week for a show, starting with the Broadway Calls show on Wednesday, the 27th. This shows they have faith in us, and I hope we prove to them that they're making the right decision.
I know everyone's a little upset about the dancing policy, but John is working his damnedest ("damnedest" is a particularly awkward looking word when spelled correctly, isn't it?) to make sure EVERYONE can express themselves at shows. Currently, they've changed the policy to allow dancing in a sectioned-off, enter-at-your-own-risk area of the floor. As long as there's no fighting, you should be able to express yourself through dance however you'd like. Kudos on that, Taboo. Make sure and thank John for sticking his neck on the line for that one.
They also book a variety of bands. There are not too many venues in town that will have a huge show for American Me one night, and host a (potentially) huge show for Broadway Calls a few weeks later. Even though the owner isn't a huge fan of heavy music, he's willing to listen to what the kids around here want and book accordingly.
And let's not forget, Taboo shows are always affordable! I can't think of very many venues, anywhere, where you could expect to see a lineup like American Me, It Prevails, Atonement, and Jean Grey for $5 or less! And now they're allowing the Broadway Calls show to be $5.
So yeah, that being said, there are always improvements to be made, and by working with John and the owners, I think they are things we can overcome. Here's a few things I'd like to see:
Let's try and make the show Wednesday with Broadway Calls a successful one, so we can prove to the venue that they can host shows on multiple nights of the week and that we can have hundreds of kids packed into a room without any violence or drama!
Anyway, these are just my thoughts, and I hope you take them into account next time you're thinking about whether or not you should fully support what they're doing.
Thoughts? Ideas? Let's have a good discussion about this, I'd like to be able to have John get some reliable feedback to pass along to those who own and operate Taboo.

- Better use of the sound system. Taboo has a top-notch sound system, and I think they could EQ some bands better than they have in the past. Maybe a more involved sound check would do the trick? Audience feedback is also a plus.
- Figure out the dancing rules, make them in black and white, and enforce them consistently. Hopefully with the new sectioned-off area, this will be easier for the bouncers to sort out.
- Better drink specials on show nights (in my dreams!)
