Back in the day 50 people was like average for local shows. Especially when it was the same bands over and over again.

Let me give you a breakdown of how money works for me right now.
$10 = 2 meals. Or, 1 show, and 1 meal, or 2 shows. However, if 1 show costs $8, that throws the balance off, and I can only get snacks with the leftover cash. And the reason my money is incremented into 10's, is because that's usually what I withdraw from the bank. So I basically try and keep things as close to $5 as I can, because I'm not making a whole lot of money right now. I know to the average full-time man, $8 ain't no thing. But I'm far from full-time. I'm getting there slowly, but I'm not there yet.
Also, yes I will admit, I've seen Of Mountains a good and plenty of times. However, I've only seen Aeolus once, so I still would've gone. But, with it being $8, and the fact that I'll be playing a show with them on the 8th, I figured I'd just wait. So those were the 2 main factors that kept me from going.
As for promotion, I thought it was good enough for ME to know about the show, but really, the only way I knew about it was myspace. And people who aren't friends with 541, Of Mountains, etc., probably wouldn't have had a clue about the show, unless they had some other connection with the bands, venue, what have ye.
So to sum it up, I think $5 is a good local show price. $6 is a 5, and 4 quarters. That's still manageable. But if you're gonna put it up to $8, there should at least 1 well known band playing. And by well known, I mean signed, and or touring. But that's just my input. Do with it what you will.

There wasn't too much promotion for it, and I'm not going to lie, $8 is intimidating compared to $5. It's probably easier to promote on "5 bucks!!!" either way. Plus, as somebody already stated, $8 feels like it's going somewhere. Hell, Warped Tour tix this year just popped up for $17. That makes these $8 shows roughly half of that.
Honestly, it's also a matter of why THIS show instead of that show? All the promoting is going to be coming from local bands and that's probably the reason I'm going, but as we all know the scene is picking up... I could easily skip an $8 show at Indigo and go see it for $5 at Taboo or Memento Mori in a week or two to see the bands I want to see.

It's really all about the Memento Mori. That place is the shit. I'm sooooo stoked for summer, cuz I'm sure there's gunna be some fatty shows there. That's definitely where we should book all the big bands we wanna.

To be honest, I never heard of any of the bands besides the two locals playing, and I didn't really care to research it any further because I'm a cheap S.O.B. I've seen of mountians a handful of times, and although I REALLY want to see Aeolus, I'm not going to pay $8 to only be interested in one band, when I can catch them at taboo for $3. I did that on Saturday for the Metal Show at Memento Mori. Those who lie beneath and all those kids. That was a sad turn out. The least amount of people I've ever seen at a local show. I'd say like 10 people showed up that weren't somehow directly related to the band...and I'm sure MM did lots of promoting, and it's a new venue so people should be stoked...I felt bad for those who lie beneath (and the other bands). I bought a shirt. a cd. and gave them some money for gas because they were touring the west coast and I felt horrible about the turnout. It just shows, that without a big named headlining band, local kids aren't really interested in dropping $5, or $8. on shows with bands they're not aware of or maybe there wasn't enough promotion. who knows. I knew about this indigo show (from the myspace comments/bulletins), but I can't afford to drop $5 or $8 everytime a show is going on and I make well over minimum wage. I would love to see EVERY local show, regardless of who is playing. But in reality, I can't afford it. I don't think anyone can. Especially when I'm used to paying $3 at taboo. Why spend more on the milk, if you can get it cheaper somewhere else? or whatever that saying is. haha. $3 dollars every show adds up. $5 dollars every show adds up $8 is almost three $3 shows. so...unless some band I've been dying to see is playing I rarely shell out more than $5 a show. I guess this is kind of redundant from what has been posted here, but I figured you'd want more opinions regardless. It's sad that indigo had to make the show $8 because I'm sure if the show was $6 more people would have turned out and in turn made them more money. In a perfect world, music and shows would just be free.

Not a perfect world though.

It was during spring break, but you'd think more people would have went BECAUSE it was spring break. Personally, I couldn't go because I didn't have enough money. Not that it was too expensive, but I just didn't have enough. I would have had to pay for 3 people and I only had about 5 dollars. But I wish I could have. The touring bands sounded way cool on their myspaces.

For me it was more of a timing and promotion thing. I don't mind spending the money, although I'm not gonna lie, I'd rather spend less to see my buddies playing. Not that I don't love you guys, but like it's been said before, why at Indigo if I can get the same show at the Duck or Taboo for less?
Plus, the night before was the Atonement and Necryptic show. Which means I was tired as balls on Friday. Plus, I was moving into my new apartment that weekend. Which meant I was moving.
However, I think what really, really cinched it for me was that I found out about it on March 25th. So basically it was like oh, hey, great. Another show. I'm already going to one on Thursday, and now there's one on friday too that I just found out about.
That's kinda why I didn't go to the show on the 8th, I found out like the day before that it had been changed over the Duck after it'd been cancelled, and I already had made plans. For me it's more of a "hey lemme know more in advance."
Word d00derz.

I'll agree with most of these comments and take it a step further. This first part doesn't sound great, but think about it. You get used to certain things.
Coming from a time where I was either putting on shows myself or friends/in-a-band with the guy putting on the show, I got used to not paying. I'd spend that money on bands' CDs, t-shirts, etc. (Not to mention we'd charge five dollars for five to eight well-known bands. I wouldn't make any money, but the venue was paid and the touring bands had a couple bucks for gas.)
Clearly, these connections have dried up over the years and I find myself dealing with it in different ways. Nearly all of my performances are free or VERY low cost. Nearly all of my CDs are free or VERY low cost. Sharing the music is, above all, the most important thing.
To be honest, I've been burned out on shows for years. Can I see Thrice a sixth time? Yeah. Will I sit through Circa Survive again to do so? Probably not.
It has to be a really good bill for me to consider it, and price is a factor. Five dollars is two CDs or movies at CD/Game Exchange. It's not much, but who's got money to spare? I go to local shows to support my friends. Unless I know everybody on the bill...sorry, but I probably won't stay until the end.
I used to hate guys who act like this, but I finally get it. Would you rather do ______, or watch GFA play the same set for the 300th time? This dilemma is complicated due to our relatively small circle of bands and even smaller access to affordable venues. But I get the reasons for staying home.
They're probably similar to the reasons of 50 people who paid $8 to see your show and 15 came to mine (an hour earlier) for free.

I got a solution. Join/start a band so you can play the show. Last I heard they weren't chargin shit for that. That would help with the small circle of bands thing too.
